Kuala Lumpur, Kuching and Kuantan

"Kipling, Rudyard (1865-1936)" - English writer and poet, the first English writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize for literature (1907).

I have lived in three places in Malaysia, all beginning with the letter 'K'.

Kuala Lumpur

The first place I lived when I originally wound up on Malaysian shores back in 2002 was Kuala Lumpur (KL). I stayed there for nine months and have loved it ever since.

A view of Sunway Pyramid in Subang Jaya taken from my friend's condominium in 2002. It has changed much since then! To see inside the new Sunway Pyramid click here

Here's me standing inside the trunk of a fascinating tree at the Forest Reserve Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) in Kepong, KL

Later I moved to Kuching, which is located in the state of Sarawak on the island of Borneo.

This is where my wife is from and where I've enjoyed seven months of my life.

At a rambutan farm (the red fruit that can be seen growing on the trees). I'm holding a soursop fruit.

Finally I've settled in Kuantan. Here are some of the best images of Kuantan:

What is your favourite Rudyard Kipling piece?

What is the best place you have lived in/visited?

  1. Beautiful photos, makes me want a holiday! And that tree...well it's just amazing!

  2. That's a whole lot of places you have been in a short period... cool...
and might I say, Taman Gelora park must be cool place !

  3. Lovely pictures! I'm impressed :)

(*are you hiding behind that bush in one of the pics?)

    It looks great :) !!

  4. How useful for this challenge that you've lived in three places beginning with K! Once again I love your photographic representations of a world that I can only learn about through blogs such as this one. Thanks.

p.s. I replied to your comment on my blog. The government recently shut down most of our small local Post Offices. We now have to queue at the big central one where no one knows us. Not good.

  5. I love Kuching! All my favourite food are there! :)

Kuantan is not bad too. Just can't find my sago worms here!

  6. Wow; amazing photo's. The beach looks heavenly. I have travelled mostly in the United States; Been to the airport in England and to Switzeland. A few islands not far from Florida and Mexico.
I feel like there is so much more to see I do not no where to start.

  7. What wonderful photos, Duncan. It was almost - almost - like being on holiday with you. I hope you have a great day. Blessings...Mary

  8. Wow, great photos Duncan! Did you know the soursop made it all the way to Caribbean? (Not one of my favorites.)

  9. Your photos are beautiful. Malaysia seems very exotic and lovely, and judging from your photos, the people are friendly. Thanks for sharing!

  10. KL has always fascinated me and I must hop on one of those cheap junkets soon. My nephew went and adored it and wants to return.

Paris is my favourite place in the world and i've seen a lot of it. I've returned there many times. The rest of France is not too shabby either. I've yet to tackle Eastern Europe.

Your photos are amazing and full of joy and happiness. Obviously you're enjoying your time in Kuantan.

  11. Holly, you should seriously consider Malaysia and Singapore for your next holiday!

cw, Taman Gelora is one of the most serene and beautiful places in Kuantan.

Barbara, you got it, I'm behind the bush!

Rosalind, all the best places in Malaysia just seem to begin with "K"! That's a real shame about the Post Office closures. I wonder if our local post office in Glenfield has been closed too?

My wife misses her sago worms!!!

doreen, I love to go to that beach, it's a 15-minute drive from my apartment.

Mary, I'm glad to take you to my part of the world - almost!

Bish, I didn't know that. I love soursop juice, but I've never tried it directly from the fruit itself.

Lisa, the people are friendly and laid-back, sometimes a little too laid-back, but it's a good life here!

Denise, I'm loving life in Kuantan. I just love the constant sunshine and absence of cold, wintry weather :)

  12. Beautiful photos! Thanks for sharing. Some places I've enjoyed are Maui, HI, Santa Cruz, CA, Bahamas, anywhere where there's a beach. :)

    Reflections on Writing

  13. Hi Melissa and thanks for dropping by. Yeah anywhere is great where there's a good beach :)

  14. Wow, looks like an amazing place! How did you adjust??

  15. Great pictures, my friend!

My travel experience is limited. Even though my preference is usually for warm climates near the beach, I think my best trip was to Niagara Falls. There was something about being near that view that was incredibly relaxing. I feel like my creativity would thrive there.

Boston is my favorite American city. I've been three times now and had a blast on each visit. It's rich in culture and history. It's also clean.

And, out of all the places I've lived, I enjoyed Louisville the most. Many are surprised by that answer, especially since I've lived in NY or PA most of my life. But it really is a beautiful area with a great culture. People are more relaxed - in the north, everyone seems much more stressed out.

  16. Tang, I must admit it was somewhat of a shock at first for a month or two but being happy in my work and getting to know the local people certainly eased me into Malaysian life.

Paul, thanks for sharing your thoughts here!
