A photograph a day from Kuantan: #3 Burning Rubbish

A man burns rubbish by the roadside at the foot of Bukit Bay Route. Disposal of rubbish is a tricky dilemma in Malaysia. Mass burnings from Indonesia each year brings thick haze to many parts of Malaysia.

  1. same situation here in the Philippines. people just burn their garbage anywhere they please.

  2. Well is better than dumping into the river... I guess...

  3. Isn't it dangerous to burn it so near their houses?

  4. There used to be incinerators about the size of a small barbecue in backyards here. In the 60's the state banned burning because of the pollution. I'm not sure which is worse. Polluted air or over sized landfills. Both have their negative result.

  5. This is such a sad picture. Indonesia is always burning. Other countries suffer I'm sure. A long way to go in the recycling business here!

  6. To reply to all of you who have commented, the picture highlights the problem we face with rubbish disposal. Perhaps I should call it a dilemma - air pollution, huge landfills, tainted rivers, smog and haze. There is no preferential way of doing it, really.

People here don't really consider the health dangers of rubbish disposal until it's too late! Malaysia suffers every year from Indonesia's mass burning. I was in Klang, Malaysia one year and the haze was so thick I couldn't even see more than a couple of 100 yards down the highway.

  7. Hi Duncan .. it's interesting seeing that - it was only in 1956 .. The Clean Air Act was introduced here in the UK .. and we stopped burning rubbish .. now we have a landfill problem .. not a lot of land and most is filled up ..

The air affects everything too - not just people, buildings, plants, the ground etc ..

A problem is looming for someone .. thanks - intersting and your photos up and down the hill!

    Cheers Hilary

  8. Thanks Hilary, I sometimes wonder what will happen when we run out of land for disposing of rubbish!
