Doing Business - Our Relationship with the Hotel Industry - Part 3

Once we had become part of the Vistana family, we were able to do some business with the hotel. This took on two forms: teaching English to the hotel staff, and proofreading hotel documents.

As YTL Hotels were not keen on paying us money for our services, we engaged in an exchange of services instead. I would proofread hotel SOPs (Standard & Procedures), calculate how much I would charge based on our proofreading charges, then arrange with Wayne how many nights stay at the hotel that price would represent.

I taught two batches of Vistana Hotel staff English lessons, which comprised around 8-10 total months. In return we negotiated to have use of a function room for a full day, 4 times that year. We organised English Workshops for our students with a small price to attend, and held 3 sessions per day. That made a total of 12 sessions that year with a maximum of 20 students per session. So we were able to make a nice return.

We have also done, and continue to do, proofreading jobs for The Majestic Hotel, getting free stays in return each time. It certainly makes our KL trips even more splendid!

Letter to Kuantan Town Council

After hearing my students respond to the question, "How can we make Kuantan a better place?" in last week's English classes, I decided to compile their responses in to a letter written to the Kuantan Town Council (Majlis Perbandaran, Kuantan, or MPK).

The letter can be viewed here:

I also emailed the letter to the town council to the address they provided on their site, which is found at: MPK

I believe in being active in the community in which I live. I love Kuantan, it is my home, and I feel that it's a great thing for my English students to have been able to contribute to this letter in support of their home town.

Now let's see if I receive any response! Fingers crossed!

Dining at The Coffee House, Vistana Hotel Kuantan

It has been a while since we paid a visit to Vistana Hotel in Kuantan. We had a very good friendship with the former Hotel Manager before he was transferred to a different property. I also taught English to groups of staff during 2012 under the new Hotel Manager. Since those classes came to an end, I have missed the food at The Coffee House.

The Coffee House is Vistana Hotel's only restaurant and is located on the Ground Floor beside the swimming pool. We enjoy many items on the menu.

The staff are very well presented, friendly and welcoming, yet at the same time, not over-intrusive. The Coffee House is neat and tidy with calming music playing quietly.

We sat in our usual place and selected our food. A waiter took our order and informed the kitchen.

Mango juice

Crispy DJ Chicken

Spaghetti Bolognese, my personal favourite

Chicken Nuggets for Lauren

We had a very pleasant meal. I also love the Caesar Salad, which I had on a previous meal with friends, and I recommend that one for a nice healthy boost.

We will have to stay a night at Vistana Hotel again some time soon, we do miss the suite!

When students interview their teacher

Today I just have to direct you over to our English class blog for a great post.

Last week in our English classes, we had our students interview me. And they sure asked some very interesting questions. Questions that made me cringe, questions that made me laugh, and questions that really got me thinking!

Read all of the most notable questions and the answers I gave by clicking this link:

Hop on over and let me know what you think!

Saturday Blog Tour featuring Julia Roberts, an old nature photo and the legend Roger Federer!

Can anyone believe it's the weekend again?! Today I'll tell you a little about what we've been doing this week and show you around  my blogs.

First up, we have been watching the movie "Mirror Mirror" starring Julia Roberts and Lily Collins, with our students in our English classes this week. It's a great movie. We prepared 20 questions to test our students listening and comprehension skills. To read about the importance of listening in English, click the link to go to my latest post.

Next is an old photo but still one of my favourite nature pictures. Check it out at my nature blog. I've also adjusted this blog to make it easier to browse all of my photos on the same page. Go and have a look around at the beauty in Kuantan right here.

The final installment for today is Roger Federer. I miss watching him play now that the tennis season is over. It's been a good year for him. At my Roger Federer Shrine I'm discussing more about this tennis legend and what makes him so great. You could also submit an answer on 3 ongoing polls on the page!

I hope you'll find a little something here to light up your Saturday. Thank you for taking the tour, and I look forward to sharing more photos from my Canon EOS 650D with you next week!
